Summer school on Marine Protected Areas: An interdisciplinary approach to the management and conservation of marine and coastal ecosystems

Faced with the erosion of biodiversity and the sixth mass extinction, strategies to protect marine and coastal ecosystems have taken on a central role in public policy. Marine protected areas (MPAs) have become an essential tool, with an Internationally agreed target of protecting 10% of marine and coastal areas, soon to be raised to 30%. However, their effectiveness depends on active and integrated management, taking into account ecological, legal, socio-economic and political dimensions.

The Summer school proposes an interdisciplinary approach to these issues through the study of the Parc national des Calanques, an emblematic area combining rich biodiversity and anthropic pressures. This exceptional setting will enable us to tackle issues such as Resources management, pollution, climate change and the social acceptance of conservation measures.

The program alternates lectures and field trips, including a sea excursion on the first day. Under the guidance of researchers and experts, participants will explore MPAs from different angles, from micro-organisms to global Mediterranean dynamics. This training course is aimed at Masters students, PhD students and conservation professionals, offering them a comprehensive overview of the challenges and tools of MPA management.
