Ocean 2026 Summer School: Understanding plastic pollution in the marine environment: interdisciplinary approach and means of action

A week to understand, explore and act

This summer school offers an interdisciplinary approach to plastic pollution in the marine environment. It explores methods for measuring plastics - from nanoplastics to macroplastics - in different environmental contexts, from the Mediterranean to the southern hemisphere.

Alternating lectures, practical work and field trips, this summer school aims to strengthen the links between research and society. It will enable participants to gain a better understanding of the complexity of plastic pollution at sea, and to identify concrete courses of action in the face of this major environmental challenge.

Why take part?

  • Interdisciplinary approach: law, ecology, economics, sociology, biogeochemistry, history, geography...
  • Committed experts: researchers, legal experts, practitioners, institutional partners
  • Crossed perspectives: North/South views, plurality of legal and political systems
  • Field trips & practical workshops: National Park, experiments, case studies
  • 3 ECTS validated with daily assessment (MCQ)

A rich, immersive program

This summer school takes an interdisciplinary approach to plastic pollution in the marine environment. It covers methods for measuring plastics, from nanoplastics to macroplastics, in different environmental contexts, from the Mediterranean to the southern hemisphere. Participants will also explore regulatory issues and existing levers for action, notably through innovation and participatory science. The summer school is structured around lectures, a field trip and practical work, to foster links between research and society. The aim is to enable participants to understand the complexity of plastic pollution at sea, and to identify concrete ways of tackling the problem. Classes will be held from June 1 to 5 at various Aix-Marseille-Université sites.
